Pet Bereavement
The loss of a loved one, whether a family member or treasured pet is a very painful experience. There is support for those whose pets have passed away so please don’t feel alone and isolated. There are people who understand and are there to support you, to help get you through this difficult time. It is important for you to have someone to talk to who understands exactly how you are feeling and what the loss of your pet means to you.
Life with your pet was filled with love and friendship and suddenly it may seem very empty. Feelings of deep sadness and loneliness are not uncommon. People always say time is a great healer, and that memories never die. Allow yourself time to grieve, remembering your pet in whichever ways help you best, whether it be writing it down in a journal; talking to other family members or friends; visiting places you visited together or simply looking through photos and reminiscing. Pets become cherished family members, a friend and companion and their death is a very emotional time, bringing with it a sense of enormous loss. It is normal to experience many emotions – shock, disbelief, numbness, anger, pain, hurt, sadness, guilt and overwhelming grief.
If you have had to make the agonising decision to have your pet put to sleep, this may be particularly difficult. However making such a decision shows that you put your pet’s well being before your own thoughts and feelings. This in turn shows the enormous amount of love you had for your pet. When a pet we love is ill and suffering, there is no other choice but to end any suffering by making the painful decision to have their life ended with dignity and in a humane way. These tough decisions take courage.
Sue and Maryjane are always available to talk with you or just listen.
